Margaret reflects during this episode that “one of the biggest struggles for me is finding time to offer support to everyone who needs it while staying focused on the work I am trying to do every day.” I know for most DEI Leaders, that is your struggle as well. So how do you stay focused and support everyone – when you also need support to keep going? How do you prioritize and get stuff done if you’re helping everyone?
In this episode of Inclusion Unscripted with Margaret Spence, we will unpack DEI Leader Wellness – what do we need to be whole? Is the work enough? Or do we need more support?
Let’s have a candid talk about DEI Leader Burnout – What is it, and how can you avoid it or learn how to manage burnout?
What is DEI Leader Burnout?
DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) leader burnout refers to the state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion experienced by individuals in leadership roles responsible for driving and implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within organizations or communities.
These leaders are crucial in fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment. Still, the complexity and sensitivity of their work can take a toll on their well-being. Constantly navigating challenging conversations, addressing systemic issues, and advocating for change in the face of resistance can lead to heightened stress levels, feelings of frustration, and a sense of overwhelm.
Additionally, DEI leaders may carry the weight of high expectations, as their efforts often involve addressing deeply entrenched biases and historical inequalities. Without adequate support and resources, these leaders can experience burnout, hindering their ability to lead effectively and potentially undermining the very initiatives they are working so hard to advance. Organizations must recognize and address this burnout to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of their DEI efforts.

Three Critical Signs DEI Leader is Burnt Out
- Emotional Exhaustion: One of the key indicators of burnout is feeling emotionally drained and overwhelmed. You may find yourself lacking motivation, feeling irritable, and experiencing a sense of cynicism or detachment from your work or daily activities. Tasks that used to be manageable may now feel insurmountable, leading to a decrease in productivity and a sense of hopelessness.
- Physical Symptoms: Burnout can manifest in physical symptoms as well. Individuals experiencing burnout may suffer from persistent headaches, unexplained aches and pains, frequent illnesses, changes in appetite, or disruptions in sleep patterns. The chronic stress associated with burnout can have a significant impact on the body, leading to a compromised immune system and an overall decline in physical health.
- Reduced Performance and Engagement: Burnout can negatively affect performance and engagement in both personal and professional spheres. In the workplace, you may notice a decline in productivity, an increase in errors, and difficulty concentrating or making decisions. In social settings, you might withdraw from activities and isolate yourself from friends and family. Burnout can lead to a sense of disconnection and a loss of interest in things that once brought joy and fulfillment.
It’s important to recognize these signs of burnout early and take proactive steps to address them, such as seeking support from friends, family, or professionals, making time for self-care, setting boundaries, and considering adjustments to workload or responsibilities if possible.
